The Minor Leaguers (11-21-2022)

November 22, 2022

From the desk of Steve Strazza @Sstrazza

Welcome to our latest Minor Leaguers report.

We've had some great trades come out of this small-cap-focused column since we launched it back in 2020 and started rotating it with our flagship bottom-up scan, Under the Hood.

For the first year or so, we focused only on Russell 2000 stocks with a market cap between $1 and $2B.

That was fun, but we wanted to branch out a bit and allow some new stocks to find their way onto our list.

We expanded our universe to include some mid-caps.

To make the cut for our Minor Leaguers list, a company must have a market cap between $1 and $4B.

And it doesn't have to be a Russell component — it can be any US-listed equity. With participation expanding around the globe, we want all those ADRs in our universe.

The same price and liquidity filters are applied. Then, as always, we sort by proximity to...

Follow the Flow (11-21-2022)

November 22, 2022

From the Desk of Steve Strazza @sstrazza and Alfonso Depablos @Alfcharts

This is one of our favorite bottom-up scans: Follow the Flow.

In this note, we simply create a universe of stocks that experienced the most unusual options activity — either bullish or bearish, but not both.

We utilize options experts, both internally and through our partnership with The TradeXchange. Then, we dig through the level 2 details and do all the work upfront for our clients.

Our goal is to isolate only those options market splashes that represent levered and high-conviction, directional bets.

We also weed out hedging activity and ensure there are no offsetting trades that either neutralize or cap the risk on these unusual options trades.

What remains is a list of stocks that large financial institutions are putting big money behind.

And they’re doing so for one reason only: because they think...

[PLUS] Weekly Top 10 Report

November 21, 2022

From the desk of Steve Strazza @Sstrazza

Our Top 10 Charts Report was just published.

In this weekly note, we highlight 10 of the most important charts or themes we're currently seeing in asset classes around the world.

Energy and Crude Diverge

Crude oil (CL_F) and energy stocks have been trending in different directions since this summer, but the gap between the two has become more pronounced during the trailing month. We’ve included the 100-day rolling correlation, illustrating how rare such a prolonged dislocation is. With the Energy sector XLE failing to hold above its June highs this week, this divergence becomes a more-concerning datapoint for energy bulls.

[PLUS] Weekly Market Notes: Slow and Steady Wins The Race

November 21, 2022
From the desk of Willie Delwiche.

Just when 2022 was getting known for noise, the markets quieted down last week. For the first time in five weeks, the S&P 500 did not move 3% in one direction or the other. For the first time this year, no trading day last week saw the S&P 500 move 1% or more in either direction. We begin a new week with the S&P 500 not having moved 1% or more in either direction in six straight days. It has been a year since it has had a longer streak of small swings.

More Context: In the past half century, the only years with more 1% daily moves than 2022 were 2008 and 2002. Before this recent run of quiet, the S&P 500 had moved by 1% on more than half of the trading days. Historically there is an inverse relationship between volatility and strength. In the past half century, no year had fewer 1% moves than did 2017 (which had fewer for the entire year than 2022 is averaging per month). When daily volatility subsides, prices typically rise. That was the case in 2016-17, mid-2018, late-2019, and (to a lesser...

[Options Premium] Leadership We Want To Buy

November 21, 2022

While bargain clothes shoppers seem to be driving profits in a way Wall Street likes, it takes a certain kind of trader to buy stock in the company when it's making new All-Time Highs.

Well, I just happen to be that type of trader! In fact, one of my favorite setups is to buy stocks making fresh all-time highs. There is no overhead supply of bagholders looking to dump the stock to get back to even. Nothing but blue skies ahead.

And when options premium has collapsed, we can buy long calls to put ourselves in a position to enjoy the possibility of unlimited gains.

Let's go shopping!

Getting Some More Sun

November 21, 2022

Tomorrow, I'm off for a roadie to Wellington to catch up with some buddies and to go to a lecture. It all should be a great time.

Last week, I spent some time at my Mum's lifestyle block, house-sitting and looking after their animals.

It's moments like these where you can unwind and clear your head. This is especially important when you're involved in these markets.

Random internet tokens?

Rug-pulls?

Mass liquidations?

It all seems false when you step outside and unwind.

In this market, I've spent less time looking at charts and more time thinking and contemplating. Don't force your hand in environments like these.

If you try to find setups instead of seeing them, you'll enter into trades you'll inevitably regret.

Have Your Steak (and Pay for It, Too!)

November 18, 2022

From the Desk of Ian Culley @IanCulley

I’ve tried the paleo diet.

I’ve even gone primal, cutting carbs while increasing fats for long periods of time.

But I haven’t tried the new all-meat-all-the-time lifestyle.

Whether you’re a full-on carnivore -- or even if you just enjoy a nice steak once in a while -- it’s time to hedge against rising beef costs using the futures markets.

Check out the chart of feeder cattle futures:

Feeder cattle represent weaned calves making their debut at the feed lots. They range from six to 10 months old and tend to weigh between 600 and 800 pounds.

While these young cows still have weight to put on, from the looks of the weekly chart, they’re planning to eat well this holiday season.

Feeder cattle futures hit our initial target during summer and have since corrected. Despite the recent pullback, the uptrend...

Young Aristocrats (November 2022)

November 18, 2022

From the Desk of Steve Strazza @Sstrazza

Dividend Aristocrats are easily some of the most desirable investments on Wall Street.

These are the names that have increased dividends for at least 25 years, providing steadily increasing income to long-term-minded shareholders.

As you can imagine, the companies making up this prestigious list are some of the most recognizable brands in the world. Coca-Cola, Walmart, and Johnson & Johnson are just a few of the household names making the cut.

Here at All Star Charts, we like to stay ahead of the curve. That's why we're turning our attention to the future aristocrats.

In an effort to seek out the next generation of the cream-of-the-crop dividend plays, we're curating a list of stocks that have raised their payouts every year for five to nine years.

We call them the Young Aristocrats, and the idea is that these are "stocks that pay you to make money."

Imagine if years of consistent dividend growth and high momentum and relative strength had a baby, leaving you with the best of the emerging dividend giants that are outperforming the averages.

By adding our...
