The Short Report (05-17-2023)

May 18, 2023

From the Desk of Steve Strazza @Sstrazza

When investing in the stock market, we always want to approach it as "a market of stocks."

Regardless of the environment, there are always stocks showing leadership and trending higher.

We may have to look harder to identify them depending on current market conditions. But there are always stocks that are going up.

The same can be said for weak stocks. Regardless of the environment, there are always stocks that are going down, too.

We already have multiple scans focusing on stocks making all-time highs, such as Hall of Famers, Minor Leaguers, and the 2 to 100 Club.

We filter these universes for stocks that are exhibiting the best momentum and relative strength characteristics.

Clearly, we spend a lot of time identifying and writing about leading stocks every week, via multiple reports.

Now, we're also highlighting lagging stocks on a recurring basis.

Welcome to the Short Report.

Betting On More Rotation

May 18, 2023

Sector Rotation is the life blood of a bull market.

In the back half of last year, almost everything was working - except for some growth stocks and Tech.

Then came 2023. The best performers have been growth stocks and Tech.

That's what we mean by "sector rotation".

Last year they were all bitching about the fact that these Tech stocks and the Nasdaq weren't working, even through practically everything else was.

This year they're bitching that these Tech stocks are the only ones working (hint: they're not the only ones).

Large-cap Tech outperforming does not mean that market breadth is weakening. It just means that Large-cap Tech is outperforming.

This is classic sector rotation - a characteristic regularly found throughout bull markets.

So what comes next?

[Options] Does the Big Cat Have Any Fight In It?

May 17, 2023

[9/7: stop moved to 260. We're already #FreeRiding on this one. So whatever we sell the remaining position for is pure profit!]

Today's trade leans against a significant support level that we believe will hold. But because the stock is at such a delicate level where it could quickly collapse on us if the level doesn't hold, we're going to keep the play simple and cleanly define our risks.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's the chart of Caterpillar $CAT that's got our attention:

Swing Trader Pro: Morning Briefing (05-17-2023)

May 17, 2023

From the Desk of Kimmy Sokoloff

Talks over the debt ceiling are still going on, and the futures are higher in hopes of an outcome.

The 410 area has been a solid support level for $SPY. We've broken below there for short periods, but we continue to hold it.

Track These Levels as the DXY Rallies

May 16, 2023

From the Desk of Ian Culley @IanCulley

Dollar up…

Everything else?

Down.

Last Friday’s action sent flashbacks of 2022 across my screen.

It was all King Dollar last week as risk assets and bonds sold off in tandem.

But before we all get carried away talking about the next leg higher for the dollar, let’s zoom out to get a read on where the DXY truly stands…

In the middle of a short-term range.

The US Dollar Index $DXY finished last Friday, posting its best week since peaking in late September 2022.

But it’s been stuck between 105 and 101 since December:

The DXY might have gained 1.5% last week, but it’s stuck below a key retracement level. It’s a range-bound mess like much of the market despite the recent bout of strength.

Sideways is the trend.

But what is the likelihood the trend will change in the coming weeks?

Monitor the EUR/USD if you want to know if we have a potential dollar rally on our hands. I believe the euro holds the...

Under the Hood (05-15-2023)

May 16, 2023

From the Desk of Steve Strazza @Sstrazza.

Welcome back to Under the Hood, where we'll cover all the action for the week ended May 12, 2023. This report is published bi-weekly and rotated with The Minor Leaguers.

What we do here is analyze the most popular stocks during the week and find opportunities to either join in and ride these momentum names higher, or fade the crowd and bet against them.

We use a variety of sources to generate the list of most popular names.

There are so many new data sources available that all we need to do is organize and curate them in a way that shows us exactly what we want: a list of stocks that are seeing an unusual increase in investor interest.

Watch this video for a behind the scenes look at our process.

Whether we’re measuring increasing interest based on large institutional purchases, unusual options...

The Buzz 🐝 Week 11

May 15, 2023
Welcome to The Buzz!

Week starting May 15, 2023 | Edition No. 11

Our mission at The Buzz is simple: to identify and profit from the most-talked-about stocks on social media.

Every week, we compile a list of stocks trending tickers that are experiencing a large increase in the investor interest. We use social media data from our partners at Likefolio.

In each weekly report, we outline 1-3 actionable trades. We also take a closer look at a few other charts from our list. Some weeks will have more actionable setups than others, as we don’t want to force trades.

With any bottoms-up scan, many of these stocks are at the mercy of the broader market. We will always consider the current market environment when identifying our long/short ideas.

None of these setups are guaranteed to work. Profitable trading requires you to take small losses and let your winners run. If price closes below our risk levels, we want to take the small loss and move on, to preserve capital for future opportunities.

As always, feel free to reach out to me at Patrick@thechartreport.com...
